National Facial Protection Month

Article by Dr. Leaver & Dr. Gardner

IMPORTANCE OF FACIAL PROTECTION

Facial protection is essential during physical activities to prevent dental injuries, facial fractures, and head trauma. Dental injuries can cause long-term problems such as tooth loss and misalignment, while facial fractures can lead to surgery and a lengthy recovery time. Wearing a mouthguard or helmet can reduce the risk of dental and facial injuries and provide peace of mind during physical activities.

TYPES OF FACIAL PROTECTION

There are different types of facial protection available, depending on the activity. Mouthguards are essential for high-impact sports such as football, hockey, and boxing, while helmets are necessary for activities such as biking, skiing, and skateboarding. Custom-made mouthguards and helmets provide the best fit and protection for the individual.

PROPER USE AND CARE OF FACIAL PROTECTION

Proper use and care of facial protection are crucial to their effectiveness. Mouthguards should fit snugly, cover the upper teeth, and allow for easy breathing and speaking. They should be rinsed with cold water and stored in a clean, ventilated container after use. Helmets should fit securely and be replaced if they become damaged or involved in a collision.
