All About Invisalign
Offering Invisalign in Las Vegas for decades!
An innovative clear teeth-straightening option that’s a marked departure from traditional braces, Invisalign invisible braces use clear plastic “aligner trays” that fit over the teeth. Invisibility is one big plus, and another is the fact that the aligners can be taken out when you eat, drink, brush, and floss.
Photos, X-rays, and impressions are used to create a 3-D image of your mouth. Your initial set of precisely fitted aligner trays is made from this, and the teeth-straightening process begins. You get a new set of custom-made aligners every couple of weeks, and each successive set is designed to move your teeth a bit more toward the final desired position. Progress is monitored on visits to the doctor about every six weeks. Depending on the individual, most patients wear Invisalign aligners for nine to 15 months, with 18 to 30 sets typically used over the course of the treatment.
Differences Between Invisalign and Traditional Teeth Braces
Unlike traditional braces, smooth plastic Invisalign aligners have no metal components that might cause irritation. (You may feel some initial pressure when you switch to a new set of aligners.) And because they’re removed when you eat, there aren’t the dietary restrictions that go along with wearing braces—bring on the popcorn and peanuts! In fact, the aligners must be removed for eating and for drinking anything other than water, so you need to make sure you’re willing to do that before you decide on Invisalign clear braces.
To prevent staining, you’ll need to clean your teeth each time you eat before putting the aligners back in place. Of course, brushing and flossing are much easier than with traditional braces, since you don’t have to work around any brackets and wires. That’s a definite advantage in terms of your overall oral health.
It’s also important to commit to wearing the aligners for at least 22 hours each day in order for them to do their job of straightening your teeth. That said, with Invisalign you do have the option of temporarily removing your aligners for special occasions. As with traditional braces, a retainer is generally recommended following Invisalign treatment in order to maintain your new alignment—and your confident new smile.
Invisalign may not be recommended for some complex alignment or bite issues, or for those who have bridgework; the doctor can advise you about what options are best for you.
